It’s been a good three years since the RetroN GX was announced, but the project is finally almost finished and Hyperkin’s PC Engine/Turbografx-16-based retro console now has a release date and price set, with a launch not far away.
The new device will be available this May at a price of $95, pending the official price for Europe. This is great news for many enthusiasts, especially considering that Hyperkin’s project seemed to have been lost in thin air, given the accumulated delay.
The RetroN GX was announced in 2022, but was then postponed to 2023 due to the semiconductor crisis that made it difficult to start large-scale production, with difficulties in assembly.
The return of a historic console
Since 2023 there has been no further news on the RetroN GX, which evidently took much longer than expected: the console has recently resurfaced and now has an official page on the Guinea Pig Games store, which specializes in this type of product.
The console in question allows you to use PC Engine and Turbografx-16 games, that is, the famous NEC machine launched in 1987 in Japan and a couple of years later in North America with the second name and which has become a real cult for fans of 16-bit and Japanese games in general.
Now those titles can be used directly on the RetroN GX, capable of reading the particular original cartridges of the NEC system and returning a 720p image with various settings to choose from in terms of image format and filters (scanline and various graphics management systems).
The system also allows various types of saves (including save states) and a rewind system that allows you to rewind the last sequences of the games in order to have additional attempts.
