Nintendo Switch Online Removes Game in Europe and USA: Is This a Bad Precedent?

As we’ve already reported, the video game Super Formation Soccer (known in the West as Super Soccer) has been removed from the Japanese catalog of Nintendo Switch Online. This is the first time that something like this has happened, but initially there were doubts that it was all linked to the Japanese version only and that the European and American versions were safe.

Well, that’s not the case.

Details of the removal of the Nintendo Switch Online game

Nintendo has in fact confirmed that Supper Soccer will be removed from the Nintendo Switch Online libraries in Europe and the United States. To date, there are over 300 games on the subscription service for the console, which includes titles for NES, SNES, Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, Nintendo 64 and Sega Mega Drive, so users are certainly not short of titles to enjoy, but clearly it is a precedent that could be repeated.

We can probably assume that Nintendo-developed games will never be removed, but third-party titles may eventually be removed from their original publishers. Super Soccer will no longer be accessible on March 28.

Responding to the news on Twitter, former PlatinumGames co-founder and current Clovers Studio founder Hideki Kamiya – who regularly posts about his love of retro games – criticized the move, calling for the return of the Virtual Console service, which was available on the Wii, Wii U and 3DS and allowed you to purchase individual games. “Hey, hey, hey, I guess subscriptions are bad after all,” Kamiya wrote, as seen above. “Seriously, bring back Virtual Console… don’t be so mean.”

It should be noted, however, that the Virtual Console had also suffered some eliminations, with games such as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Yoshi’s Cookie, Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure, Aleste, SimCity, Street Fighter II, Final Fight 1-3, Super Turrican 2 and Super R-Type.
