PUBG creator Brendan Green is working on a very ambitious project: Project Artemis, an open-world sandbox that promises to give us access to a game world as large as the Earth. This description might sound familiar: it sounds more or less like what Hello Games is doing with Light no Fire, after having proposed the boundless space of No Man’s Sky.
According to Greene, however, his project is very different for one simple reason: his is not a video game. It’s a real world.
What makes Project Artemis different
Greene says that his project – which could still be a decade away – differentiates itself from Hello Games’ efforts because of the technology used. He explained that “Light No Fire is procedural.” Greene, on the other hand, says he is using machine learning technology to make Project Artemis. But the difference also has to do with Greene’s design philosophy.
“I don’t know their tech stack,” he explains, “so I’m not very familiar with how they build things, but I don’t think the goal is the same at the end of the day, which is to provide an open-source product. And that’s the difference. I think most people are making games. I’m not making a game, I’m building a world.”
That world will house “games and experiences that take place within that world,” and Greene says the important part of all of this will be the people who build the games inside Project Artemis. “I don’t want to make games for people, I want to make games with people.” It’s that approach that Greene says will shape his product: “If you give the player or the community the means to build their own experiences, they’re going to be excited.”
The PUBG creator has previously said he wants to create a true metaverse with Project Artemis.
